Why Is My Air Conditioner Leaking Water?

While summer may be winding down, that temperature is still staying hot. The lawns are still green and everyone is getting the last bit of the great weather while they still can before we brace for another potentially rough winter.

Things are on an upswing, but lately, something’s been bothering you. You’ve come to notice that your air conditioner is leaking water, and you can’t figure out why. It seems to be working properly, but surely it’s not supposed to do that right? If you find yourself asking this question then you’re in the right place.

United Water Restoration Group of The Woodlands would like to take this time today to talk about what your AC leaking water means when it’s normal, and when you should be concerned.

Concern vs Condensation

Seeing some water around your air conditioner isn’t an immediate cause for alarm. Ask yourself the following questions: Is the water only trace amounts, or is it a large amount that is damaging your property? Is the water normally only a little bit but today it seems like it’s literally flowing from the unit?

Under normal operations, your air conditioner leaking water isn’t a cause for concern. The resulting condensation is basically a normal reason to see your air conditioner leaking water, and the hotter the day the more it’s going to leak.

However, if your air conditioner is leaking an amount of water beyond what you normally see or it’s leaking enough that it’s actively causing damage, it’s a sign of an underlying issue. It could be everything from a clogged air filter to clogged drainage, and sometimes a lack of freon. Luckily with most modern air conditioner units, these problems can be addressed except in matters of extreme mechanical failure.
